I have travelled to the South of France several times and each time gets better! My adventure always changes: from staying locally in Nice, using local transport and relying on tour buses to see places like Monaco
What i found most rewarding was hiring a car and seeing more than what was outlined on blogs & tripadvisor. It all depends on your interests and in the South of France I discovered a better love for the outdoors. If you want a city itinerary & to stay local in Nice this is not the post for you. If you want to hire a car and adventure please read on.
An adventure in France also included camping!
Below are my highlights from my different visits to the South of France – i have travelled with friends & my boyfriend.
2 hours from Nice airport
the adventure begins in Moustiers Sainte Marie
This photo was taken enroute to Moustiers Saint Marie a historical and beautiful village. This place has a lot to offer in terms of location it is like a fairytale. There is a gold star suspended between two cliffs & a waterfall in the village.
I’ve visited this place on most of trips as it is close to many villages and activities. What i loved about Moustiers Sainte Marie was the trail to the church at the top of the cliff and the trail was overlooking the village (the hotel & tourist information office will have this on a map – trainers are needed)
I highly recommend the following hotels
Le Relais de Moustiers:
This sits directly in the village & right next to a waterfall! This place is close to all restaurants & great place to stay if it is only for a single night. These hotels are a short walk away & good for extended stays
Hotel Le Colombier:
With an outdoor jacuzzi & panoramic views
The room has a little garden area
Good for days in to relax
Hotel Les Restanques De Moustiers:
a short walk away from the village & tranquil,
the rooms are large & beautifully set up. There is also a large outdoor pool.
“I’m the captain now”
Extremely close to the village is the Lac de Sainte-Croix a resevoir where you can hire a canoe, kayak, pedal boat or an electronic motor boat. No need to book in advance there are stalls are along the lake – just make sure you check the weather & set off early to beat any crowds
When driving from Moustiers Sainte Marie the signpost is called ‘Lac de Sainte Croix du Verdon’ . Previously I’ve hired a motorboat & pedal boat from ‘Base de l’Etoile’ and another time a kayak from ‘Verdon Canoe’
Lets move on from Moustiers Sainte Marie and travel further..
Valensole – driving here was a dream. The scent of lavender in the air could be smelt way before seeing the purple fields. The fields are only in bloom certain times in the year – This was taken in July
